Where Your Salad Comes From: The Story of Ben's Creek Produce

There is a question we get asked more than almost any other: "Why does your salad taste so different?"

The honest answer is simple. It starts about 12 miles down the road.

Meet Ben's Creek Produce

Tucked along the banks of the Patuxent River in Saint Leonard, Maryland, sits a farm that has been in the same family for six generations. The land is called Stonesby Farms, and for most of its history it was dedicated to grain farming. But in recent years, something new grew out of that same soil — a greenhouse operation called Ben's Creek Produce, built with one clear purpose: to bring the highest quality, cleanest produce possible to the local community.

Ben's Creek is not a typical farm. They do not grow in soil. They do not use pesticides. They do not use harmful chemicals of any kind. Instead, they grow their lettuce hydroponically — a method that uses water, recycled nutrients, and a carefully controlled environment to produce greens that are consistently crisp, clean, and vibrant. Their closed system recycles every drop of water and every nutrient, making it one of the most eco-friendly growing operations in Southern Maryland.

What They Grow

Ben's Creek specializes in Romaine Lettuce, Butter Lettuce, and Microgreens — including Radish and Arugula. These are the same varieties you will find in your Sip and Stack salad today. They grow year-round, 365 days a year, which means there is no "off season" and no compromise on quality regardless of the time of year.

The Part That Gets Us Every Time

Here is what makes Ben's Creek truly special: their produce is harvested and delivered to us within hours. Not days. Hours. That means the lettuce in your salad this afternoon was still growing in a greenhouse in Saint Leonard this morning.

That is what "fresh" actually means. Not "fresh-ish." Not "arrived this week." Harvested this morning, on your plate this afternoon.

Why This Matters to Us

When we started Sip and Stack, we made a promise to ourselves and to Prince Frederick: we would never cut corners on ingredients. Fast food does not have to mean low-quality food. And "local" is not just a marketing word — it is a commitment to the people and the farms that make this community what it is.

Partnering with Ben's Creek Produce is one of the ways we live that commitment every single day. When you order a salad at Sip and Stack, you are not just feeding yourself. You are supporting a sixth-generation Southern Maryland family that chose to do things the right way — pesticide-free, eco-friendly, and hyper-local — because they believe this community deserves the best.

So do we.
